Hei!
I'm new to learning Finnish. I've been trying to learn it for a little over a year, but usually get intimidated by the time I reach the middle of the a second chapter of any learning book. I made it a goal to get through at least one book before the end of the year this time, though. I had two questions:
1) Which book do you suggest learning from? I have Teach Yourself FInnish, Beginner's Finnish (through Hippocrene's), and I have access to Colloquial Finnish via my library.
2) Does anyone know of any stores that sell Finnish language books online, or anything Finnish store that ships to the US?

Toivottavasti kaikilla on ollut hyvä viikonloppu! Tuliko juotua? :)
Olen nimenomaan tekemässä pientä sanakirjatutkimusta ja valitsin hienon "Suurella sydämellä ihan sikana"-nimisen sanakirjan♥
Siinä on ihan sikana ilmauksia, jotka tarkoittaa "olla humalassa" jne. Joten valitsin tämän aiheen :P
Eli ois hienoa jos muutama jäsen, joka puhuu suomea äidinkielenään tai muutenkin sujuvasti, vastaisi kysymykseeni:
Mitä fraaseja, idiomeja tai kuvaannollisia sanoja* käytät merkityksessä "olla humalassa"? Mitkä niistä vain tunnet ja mitkä käytät itse**?
* yksittäinen sana, joka on idiomin kaltainen, esimerkiksi siniverinen, punakynä.
** laita vaikka +, jos itse käytät jotakin ilmausta.

Mustasukkaisuus = jealousy. My question is simple - why do Finns associate jealousy with black socks?
Is this an archaic term? Does it act like some metaphor? Does anyone know anything about its etymology/cultural background? Are there any more abstract concepts (such as jealousy) that are represented with equally colourful words or expressions in Finnish?
I have many questions, but mustasukkaisuus demands them. Paljon kiitoksia!

I am a happy camper, because thanks to this community's help I've been able to get back in touch with a good Finnish friend who disappeared into the fells years ago, never to return to Turku. =) My Finnish has really rusted in the years since I last used it, but he has never spoken English well, so I'm doing my best to make myself understood in Finnish.
Perhaps some of you can ensure that I'm making sense?
1. If I want to say, "Clearly, you made a good decision when you moved," how does this look? "Ilmeisesti, teit hyvän päätöksen kun muutit."
2. "I never pass up an opportunity to use alliteration!" The best I can figure out on my own looks like this: "En anna koskaan mahdollisuuden mennä, kayttää alkusointua!" I suspect it may not sound very good. Any suggestions?
3. And here is a paragraph in which I'm trying to describe what a struggle Finnish has become. Needless to say, it needs correcting!
"Tiedän, että tuntuu [vaikuttaa?] siltä, että osaan vielä suomea, mutta totta puhuakseni, yritän kovasti [Is there a better way to say "I'm struggling?"] vain kirjoittaa näitä lauseita. En ole opiskellut suomea 2007 jälkeen [asti?], ja nyt, kun kirjoitan suomeksi, sanakirjani ja kielioppikirjani ovat sylissäni. Kun kirjoitan, minulla ei ole kiire [I'm trying to say that I can take my time when I'm writing], mutta jos olisimme kasvokkain, meillä olisi täytyy puhua englantia. Muuten, kielipoliisi pian koputtaisivat oveeni."

dear finns and finnophiles,
1. if i send a letter "to tarvasjoki," does it go "tarvasjoelle?" "tarvasjokiin?"
2. i would like to say "Strangers might receive my letters, and use them as kindling." I don't know what case to put "sytykkeet" into...transitive? "vieraat saisivat minun kirjeitä [kirjettä???] ja käytävät niitä as kindling." i know that probably sounds awful, please help!
3. "I was thinking to myself that..." How would I say that? Does "ajattelin itsekseni" sound weird?
4. "Ranksa on vaikeampaa kuin suomea, ja suomea on vaikea!" Is that ok?
5. I am trying to say this: "When I was learning Finnish, I had a friend who would sit with me on a rock, point to the lichens, and say, 'jäkälä!' How else would I learn a useful word like jäkälä?" I am really struggling with this one. I've got: "
Kun olin oppimassa [??] suomea, minulla oli ystävä, joka voisi istua minun kanssani kalliolla, valitse jäkälien ja sanoo "jäkälä!" Miten muuta voisin oppia hyödyllistä sanaa kuin jäkälä?"
6. "Kesäkuussa menen Quebeciin [How do you say "to Quebec?"], aloittaa koulutuksen psykoanalyyttisessa koulussa." Does that make sense? I'm trying to say I'm beginning training at a school of psychoanalysis.
7. One more. How can I say, "He was whittling?" As in, whittling a piece of wood.
Thank you for any bits of help you can give me. I wish I had never stopped using Finnish.

dear finnish-speakers, and finnish-practicers,
i have not spoken finnish since 2007, when i was an exchange student in turku. previous to that, i was an exchange student in lieto in 2004. recently i have been trying to get in touch with a friend i had when i was in finland. he moved to muonio to become a wilderness guide, and i never heard from him again! i guess that's what happens when people move to muonio.
anyway, i think that i have found his father's email address, and i want to write to his father to ask about my friend's current mailing address. i don't know if his father speaks any english, so i would like my message to be in finnish. as i said, it's been a long time, so i am hoping for some help with my grammar. this is what i have so far:

Oletko Mikael Heikkilän isä? Olen amerikkalainen, joka oli Mikaelin ystävä vuosina 2004 ja 2007, kun olin vaihto-oppilaana Liedossa ja Turussa. Pyydän anteeksi, puhun suomea huonosti. Löysin sähköpostiosoitteesi kun etsin Googlen Mikaelin Tarvasjoki osoite. Olen yrittänyt saada yhteyttä Mikael, mutta minulla ei ole nykyinen osoitteensa. Viimeisen kerran, kun hän kirjoitti minulle, hän oli juuri muuttanut Muonioon. Olisiko mahdollista, että voit antaa minulle hänen nykyinen postiosoite, jotta voin kirjoittaa hänelle kirjeen? Is there a rule when to write 'hyvä' (e. g. 'olkaa hyvä') and when to write 'hyvää' ('hyvää paivä')? I'm just starting to learn Finnish and I always mix them up.

A friend of mine asked me for a favour of translating bits of English text about some video production company into Finnish. But unfortunately my Finnish language skills leave much to be desired, so when I started doing the translation I felt absolutely at a loss!..
So, could you, please, check the results of my humble translation attempts and help me with turning it into something ‘understandable’...
So, here is the original text:

I've got a grammar question that's confusing me. I understand that one can use the genitive case to express the lack of something, but what about if I'm just, simply, negating something? Like,
"He is not German."
Would it be,
"Hän ei ole saksalainen"
or
"Hän ei ole saksalaisen"
or something else entirely? I'm very sorry if this question is stupid. My textbook doesn't give examples for this - it seems to think that it's so simple there's no question about it. : / It's unfortunately driving me crazy; any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hello everybody,
I accidentally found Elisenda song by Leevi and the Leavings and now I am trying to understand what it is about. The full lyrics can be found here
Here is this passage:
Voin olla sun Che Guevara, Richard Nixon,
John F. Kennedy tai Mao Tse Tung
Ja silti suurempi haitta kai sängyssä on se
kun mä korisen kuin Aqua Lung
I translate it as:
I can be your Che Guevara, Richard Nixon,
John F. Kennedy or Mao Tse Tung
But the most unpleasent thing is
When in bed I wheeze like an Aqua Lung
Is my translation correct?
And I don't understand the point about Aqua Lung. It is scuba diving suit, right?
Any help will be appreciated.
